3 Steps for a Clean Shave

There’s a plethora of shaving advice out there for guys who need help on how to get a clean shave. It’s an ongoing struggle, particularly if you have sensitive skin or can’t stand the fact that your daily ritual doesn’t achieve optimal results. We get it.
But the art of getting a clean, smooth, daily shave doesn’t have to be complicated. There are three key factors: preparation, the shave itself, and the aftermath. Get these down and you’ll have the smoothest face in town.

The Preparation

Much has been discussed over the years about what’s best for taking your rough beard to smooth, naked face: shaving cream, shaving gel, or something else? Everyone has a preference, and which one is better for your smooth, clean shave just depends.
But always keep in mind a proper shaving preparation is supposed to help soften your beard and provide lubrication so your sharp, clean blade can easily glide over your skin and cut your hair – not your face. Why not give the age-old shaving brush technique a try if you haven’t already? Chances are you probably haven’t, and sometimes the old classics are classics for a reason – especially in shaving. Whatever you use be sure to really massage the cream, gel, or soap into your skin and beard. Just brushing it on to the surface won’t do much to get your hair ready for a close shave.

The Shave

You’re probably doing it wrong.

Firstly, for a smooth, clean shave, you absolutely need a sharp razor. Many of us shave too long and too often without changing blades. Doesn’t matter if you’re using a multi-blade razor, safety single-blade, or even a straight razor – whatever you’re using to cut the hair off your face needs to be clean and sharp. If it’s disposable, swap it out after a few shaves. If it’s not disposable or supposed to last long, just make sure whatever razor technology you’re using ensures a long lasting edge.
Secondly, know the grain of your beard. Everyone’s hair grows differently and knowing in which direction the hair of your beard grows can make the difference between smooth and irritation. We recommend shaving with the grain first in short, steady swipes of the blade. If there’s still stubble or it’s not smooth enough to your touch, you can follow up with more short, steady swipes against the grain.

The Aftermath

Just as a lot of us are hasty and impatient in the preparation, many guys cut themselves short in the shave follow-up department. After your gentle-to-your-face, yet precise shave, rinse your face off and pat your skin dry. Too much scrub-a-dub with that cheap towel (we’ll talk about upgrading your towels another time) will just add to irritation and, as a result, rough skin.
Finally, finish things off with a replenishing and refreshing treatment, particularly something that will moisturise. Again, most of us don’t moisturise enough, so take a moment to ensure that your hard work in getting rid of that beard doesn’t leave your face stinging – skip stuff with alcohol in it and reach for a well-made lotion or balm.
